This complete packing list shows you how to travel with carry-on bags only, anywhere in the world. Jess has used this packing list across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the United States… for as long as 90 days. When packing for two different climates (such as northern Europe and SE Asia), packing minimally can be much more difficult. But there are tricks.
A Note On Carry-Ons: We travel with carry-ons 99% of the time. Only carry-ons. This includes our month long honeymoon, Jess’s year of solo travel, and all of our travel together. We don’t like to wait at the airport for our suitcases when we can just pack lighter and leave the airport as soon as possible. Here’s Jess’s packing list, with some of her favorite carry-on-friendly products:
The 'Under Seat' Bag
This Tumi bag is my ‘under seat’ bag, but any bag with similar dimensions will work. It is nice to have the ‘back strap’ that loops around your suitcase handle, plus the additional straps to carry separately if needed (the large strap I leave detatched). There are two compartments to this bag. Here is how I organize it:
Lower (shoe) compartment: liquids bag, non-liquids bag, and medicine bag.
Inside slide: Ipad
Inside compartment: Sleep bag, sleep pillow, books, snacks, headphones, sunglasses, purse.
Optional Item: If we are going to a hot country, I bring 2 of these fans– which are small but super powerful.
Liquids Bag
This is the TSA approved liquids bag that I use, which is really sturdy and easy to pack a lot into.
Liquids list:
Facewash: Sothy’s Vitality (put in travel sized bottle), Moisturizer: Sunday Riley Vitamin CEO (2-3 travel sized), Sunscreen: Supergoop Unseen, Exfoliator: Derma-E Microdermabrasion, Lips: Mini Vaseline, Mascara: Covergirl, Coverup: N7 serum concealer (bought in Asia), Face Makeup: Dr. Jart+ BB Cream (I wear light-medium mixed with medium-deep, and only bring on trips with low humidity and very nice dinners because it takes up a lot of space), Ear drops: BigWave (good if you use ear plugs to sleep), Eye drops: Lumify (used rarely), Mini toothpaste (can always get more from hotels). Finally, when we’re going on a trip where we plan on drinking a lot, I always pack a tiny ziploc of 3-5 ZBiotics (which is the best hangover cure on the market- drink before a big night).
Non-Liquids Bag
I change up this specific bag a lot, but any small separate bag works (about the same size as the liquids bag). The whole point of this bag is not to take up any more space in the liquids bag, but to keep bathroom/cosmetic items close.
What’s inside:
Toothbrush, deodorant, razor, tweezer, skin exfoliator, Q-tips, floss, hairbrush (if it fits, otherwise leave outside a bag), personal medication, supplements, etc.
Sleep Bag
This bag isn’t the exact one I use, but it is similar. I take this bag out of my under seat bag and always have it right next to me when traveling on a long-haul flight.
Inside there is:
A sleep mask (this one is my current favorite- it is soft and especially good for side sleepers), earplugs (I wear Loops, which aren’t 100% soundproof but I like to hear a little bit of what is going on around me), all charging cords, and small headphones (sometimes I don’t bring my big Sony headphones, but I always bring these small ones that I use in the gym). This is a good spot to put any lip balm/vaseline or Kleenex/hand sanitizer as well, once you remove it from your liquids bag (if necessary). If you need a travel adapter, this one is recommended.
Medicine Bag
This is the exact “medicine bag” I’ve been using for years. It’s sturdy and good quality. Every few trips, I go through it and replace items. Everything is travel-sized medicine or just a ‘strip’, when possible… so I tried to include all the travel-sized items in the links below.
Here’s what’s inside:
Bandaids, Advil, Dramamine, Tums, Neosporin, Benadryl, heart burn medicine (our pick is Tagamet), Mucinex or cold/flu medicine, Alka-Seltzer tablets, Icy Hot patches, cooling patches (these work well in hot countries), salt/electrolyte packets (LMNT is my favorite brand- these work well for everything, including hangovers), and anti-nausea medicine (this all-natural option really works, we bring it everywhere). We also take mosquito repellent wipes when needed (this mosquito repellent had DEET and this one doesn’t, they both have worked for us), as well as anti-itch wipes for when you do get stung.
In my purse, I also carry a small ‘medicine bag’ with an Epipen, Benadryl, a few Bandaids, and Tagamet. For those of you who need Epipens, carry it on you and not in the medicine bag (which we always leave at the hotel). Also, any personal medication we carry separately.
Inside the Main Compartment
This is where I put my sleep bag (above), iPad, 2-3 books, larger headphones, purse, sunglasses, and travel pillow. I am obsessed with this travel pillow/scarf, and outside of big winter jackets, it is probably the largest thing I pack (but it is made of pillow-like material so it does squish down). It is soft, it is comfy, you can arrange it in tons of positions- and I have noticed a huge difference when I do and don’t bring it on flights. Unless we’re traveling over 3 weeks and I need the extra room, I bring it. Highly recommend if you have extra space.
Recent books I’ve enjoyed (and won’t depress you too much on vacation), that I recommend for a flight:
Fiction: Euphoria by Lily King
Fiction- Fantasy: Fourth Wing series
Non-fiction: Unruly by David Mitchell
Poetry: Essential Bukowski
The 'Carry-On' Suitcase
We both use this exact Briggs & Riley suitcase, which we highly recommend. The wheels are smooth, and the expander can be collapsed down by pressing on the bag after closing it.
Carry-on suitcase packing list:
* Keep in mind, I do laundry a lot on trips- in certain places like SE Asia, it is a great value and often very fast.
Shoes: 1 pair of workout sneakers, 1 pair of very thin pool sandals, 1 pair of heels or dressy shoe, 1 day/night combo shoe (then I wear the bulkiest shoe on the plane, which is normally the workout sneakers). Pack socks to match around the shoes.
Two side bags: I like reusing the washable drawstring bags that purses come in, and I put undergarments in one and bathing suits in the other. I try to only bring 2-4 bathing suits per trip, favoring ones that mix-and-match (… but I might bring up to 6 if on a beach trip).
Coverups: 1-3 (depending on thickness of fabric and type of trip)
Dresses: 4-7 (including a max of 1 bulky dress) *I mostly wear dresses
Shirts: 2-4 (crop tops are worth double, and this usually includes at least 1 long sleeve).
Bottoms: 4 max (all versatile)
Outerwear: 1 sweater. 1-2 scarves. If a cold trip- add 1 large jacket. Option for 1 thin rain-jacket. I always wear the largest outwear I’m bringing on the airplane.
Laundry bag: I bring an extra drawstring bag for laundry, and we tend to do laundry once or twice per trip (in Asia we will do it more because most hotels have great and fast laundry service)
How I pack:
I hang all of the dresses, shirts, and nice bottoms on very thin hangers, then roll them up and place them in the center of the largest part of the suitcase. Folded items go on top. Line the bag with workout clothes and anything else. The other side of the suitcase is for shoes and the two “side” bags (which can also be placed on top of the clothes if there is not enough room).
Don't Forget!
Inside my ‘under seat’ bag is my purse, which has the essentials:
Passport, phone, wallet, Epipen (if applicable), any travel necessities (such as printed copies of Visas).
You're All Set To Go 🙂
